THE ZIQQURAT AND BASILICA OF SACCARGIA

Unveiling Sardinia’s Enigmatic Past: Monte d’Accoddi and Basilica of Saccargia
As you embark on your tour of Sardinia, prepare to delve into the enigmatic history of the island through two remarkable landmarks: Monte d’Accoddi and the Basilica of the Holy Trinity of Saccargia.
Monte d’Accoddi: Where Prehistory Meets Spirituality
Nestled in the Flumenargia territory between Sassari and Portotorres, the prehistoric altar of Monte d’Accoddi stands as a testament to the island’s rich heritage. This sacred site boasts a truncated-pyramidal structure with a trapezoidal flight, constructed from limestone blocks. Remarkably, this religious edifice was built atop a pre-existing temple dating back to the Ozieri Culture (3200-2800 BC). Nearby, the “Sorcerer’s Hut,” a mysterious room with ritual significance, adds to the site’s intrigue. Surrounding the area, you’ll discover remnants of dwellings from various historical periods, including the Monte Claro Culture, Bell Beaker Culture, and Bonnanaro Culture.
Basilica of the Holy Trinity of Saccargia: Sardinia’s Romanesque Jewel
Nestled in the commune of Codrongianos in northern Sardinia, the Basilica of the Holy Trinity of Saccargia is a testament to the island’s rich Romanesque heritage. Constructed using local stone, including black basalt and white limestone, this basilica exudes the distinctive style of Tuscan Romanesque architecture. Its history dates back to 1116 when it was built over the ruins of a pre-existing monastery, under the patronage of the Giudice of Torres. Originally entrusted to Camaldolese monks who founded an abbey here, the basilica later underwent Pisane-style expansions, including the addition of an imposing bell tower. The façade’s portico, likely a later addition, is attributed to craftsmen from Lucca.
Rediscovery and Restoration
After centuries of abandonment, the Basilica of Saccargia was reborn in the early 20th century. Its restoration breathed new life into this Romanesque masterpiece, allowing visitors on a tour of Sardinia to appreciate its architectural splendor and historical significance.
These two landmarks, Monte d’Accoddi and the Basilica of Saccargia, offer captivating insights into Sardinia’s multifaceted past. As you journey through this remarkable island, immerse yourself in its rich history, culture, and spirituality, guided by the echoes of ancient civilizations and the enduring legacy of Romanesque artistry.
